One of the greatest tunes ever written, this lament was written by Niel Gow, the most iconic Scottish fiddler of all time (1727-1807) upon the death of his second wife, Margaret Urquhart, in 1805.
An award I won in 2010 at the U.S. National Scottish Fiddling championship known as the Niel Gow Fiddle Award was named after the composer of this tune. It's only been given once, and I'm fortunate to have won it, as the material prize was the violin that I now play as my primary instrument (and is the violin I played on these recordings).
I once played this tune for a group that included a long time patron of Dr. John's, my mentor and the director of the Jink & Diddle School of Scottish Fiddling. The patron spoke with me later on in which she told me the following compliment:
"When I heard you play Niel Gow's Lament for His Second Wife, that tune we've all heard thousands of times... It was so emotional. Hearing someone play with such feeling... It's something I will never forget as long as I live."
